The Navy’s senior-most civilian is calling upon academia and industry to fix the shipbuilding and repair landscape.
“I believe in the potential of our joint efforts to get shipbuilding and maintenance right,” Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro told an audience during the Naval Nuclear Submarine and Aircraft Carrier Suppliers’ Conference in Philadelphia Dec. 14. “It is my number one priority.”
Del Toro called for the creation of programs that increase capacity for naval architecture, engineering and lifecycle management. More experts in nuclear welding, robotics, software management and additive manufacturing are also needed.
“Your work on these programs will be invaluable to developing and rebuilding our nation’s shipbuilding landscape,” Del Toro said. “It is a strategic imperative that we rise to the occasion.”
