The concept of deploying anti-missile defense systems to destroy incoming ballistic missiles has been flawed from its inception more than 50 years ago, according to a group of scientists united in their quest to preserve peace. “Missile defense is supposed to protect the U.S public. The evidence shows that it doesn’t,” the Union of Concerned Scientist stated in a white paper published earlier this month. The organization cited a litany of failed tests and a price tag of more than $40 billion in taxpayer dollars, urging lawmakers as well as present and future presidents to abandon the program. “It is not a reliable defense under real-world conditions; by promoting it as a solution to nuclear conflict, U.S. officials complicate diplomatic efforts abroad, and perpetuate a false sense of security that could harm the U.S public,” the group stated.
