The Navy will name its next America-class amphibious assault ship the USS Fallujah (LHA 9), in commemoration of two tough battles in which the Marine Corps took part.
The fighting took place in the Iraqi city for which the new ship will be named in April 2004, and again in the following November and December. The campaign to retake Fallujah, dubbed Operation Phantom Fury, was the bloodiest conflict of the Iraq war.
More than 100 coalition troops died and another 300 were wounded, making it the fiercest urban combat for the Marines since the Battle of Hue during the Vietnam War.
