A Fort Hood, Texas-based soldier, Sgt. Cinthia Ramirez, has become the first female to complete the Army’s M1A2 Abrams Master Gunner Course.
Ramirez, who is assigned to Avenger Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, completed the course at Fort Benning, Georgia, on Dec. 28. She admitted that before earning her non-commissioned officer stripes, she had not always been the most motivated soldier. Further, she said, she had experienced some less-than-ideal leaders during the early part of her Army career. Once Ramirez was promoted to sergeant, she said, she became determined to address both issues.
“I was always getting in trouble as a private because I never really had a goal for myself other than ‘get through this contract,’” Ramirez said. “I [also] had some examples of pretty bad leadership, and I told myself I did not want to be that type of leader.”
Getting into the Master Gunner course and completing it was Ramirez’ path to turning her career around, she said. Even though she did not pass the first time through, she stuck with it and graduated during her second time.
“It was a much better experience because I had a better grasp of what was being explained,” Ramirez said. “Mistakes shouldn’t stop you from wanting to be a better person.”
