President Obama will present the Medal of Honor posthumously to Army Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti, for conspicuous gallantry he displayed during a June 21, 2006, firefight in Gowardesh, Afghanistan, the White House announced July 24. "He displayed immeasurable courage and uncommon valor – eventually sacrificing his own life in an effort to save his comrade," stated a White House press release. Monti, of Raynam, Mass., was attached to the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at the time. He will become the sixth service member to receive the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award for combat valor, since operations in Iraq and Afghanistan began. His parents, Paul and Janet Monti, will accept the medal.
