The Army has selected soldiers from five active duty-divisions to help the service’s recruiting command address the huge shortage of new enlistees.

The lack of new recruits is “a total Army problem,” said Gen. Andrew Poppas, commander of Army Forces Command (FORSCOM).

Army Secretary Christine Wormuth recently called the recruiting shortfall “a war for talent,” triggered by low unemployment and high wages offered by private-sector employers. Covid-19 also played a role, because recruiters had little chance to meet face-to-face with potential recruits during the quarantine.

The soldiers are being selected from: the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York; the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia; the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas; the 7th Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis/McChord, Washington; and the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

The soldiers will participate in outreach activities at “almost campaign level,” said Poppas. The effort would likely last beyond 90 days of its inception, he added.
