More service members can now pursue higher education through the University of Maryland system. The Defense Department awarded the school’s Global Campus (UMGC) a five-year contract to expand its reach to troops now serving in the Middle East, North Africa, and other downrange locations.

The arrangement includes coursework and management of testing centers at 10 locations in seven countries – Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Interested service members in those locales can take undergraduate liberal arts or select master’s degree programs.

“We are deeply proud to continue our service to those who wear the uniform of our country in this pivotal region of the world,” said retired Army Maj. Gen. Lloyd “Milo” Miles, UMGC’s senior vice president for Global Military Operations. The school has a history of educating service members that dates back to 1949, when the first instructors arrived in Europe. Instruction in Asia began in 1956. The Middle East contract extends through the 2025-26 academic year.
