The Navy christened the 11th Virginia-class submarine – USS North Dakota – during a Nov. 2 ceremony at General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, Conn. North Dakota, SSN 784, will be capable of performing surveillance, anti-submarine, and anti-ship warfare missions, mine delivery, minefield mapping, and support and delivery of special-operations forces. At 33 feet in length and a 34-foot beam, the submarine will displace 7,800 tons of water and operate at 25 knots while submerged.
