President Trump nominated Vice Adm. Michael Gilday as successor to Adm. John Richardson as chief of naval operations. Gilday becomes the first three-star selected to serve as the Navy’s top military leader since the mid-1970s, Seapower magazine reported July 15, the day he was nominated. Adm. Bill Moran initially had been selected to serve as next CNO, but removed his name from consideration when an investigation determined he and a former officer with whom he had a professional relationship had engaged in “inappropriate behavior.”
