With the protracted conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq winding down, the Army will redirect its focus to garrison-level training. Speaking at the Association of the U.S. Army Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington, D.C., Oct 21, Gen. Robert Cone, the chief of the Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), also said that the Army is ready to release new guidelines regarding the way it trains, equips, and fights. “We must reestablish training … at the installation level,” Cone said. He described a force reshaped by war, which is considerably better at counterinsurgency and acquisition. And he noted that while thousands of non-commissioned officers wear their stripes without attending required schools, and 5,000 majors hold their ranks without having attended Command and General Staff College. Cone also lauded the contributions of the Army Reserve and National Guard, calling them “part of our team.”
