The Navy commissioned its first Block IV Virginia-class submarine, named Vermont, during an Aug. 28 ceremony at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut.
“This vessel has already proven itself in service, not only because it was designed the right way, but because of the exemplary work of the men aboard,” Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro said during the commissioning. The submarine was commissioned administratively in April 2020, but the ceremony was deferred until last month because of Covid-19 concerns. There was no large audience, no tours were allowed, and all who did attend were required to wear masks.
Vermont is 377 feet long with a 34-foot beam, can dive to depths greater than 800 feet, and is capable of speeds exceeding 25 knots while submerged. It is staffed by a crew of 130, and will conduct missions that include sea control, power projection, forward presence, maritime security and deterrence.
