Certain veterans who enter hospice care after being discharged from VA medical or nursing care facilities could now qualify for full burial benefits, under a temporary regulation change.
The expanded benefit follows guidelines set forth in a recent measure passed by Congress, and applies to veterans who die between July 5 of this year and next Oct. 1.
It replaces a policy that did not necessarily include a full burial allowance to veterans who die after discharge from VA medical and nursing facilities.
“We’re excited to offer this expanded benefit, which better supports benefits who choose to spend their final days at home, surrounded by their loved ones,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “We are working hard to fully implement the many provisions [of the law].”
