Veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) would have increased access to treatment, under a series of initiatives underway. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced plans that would:
Increase collaboration among researchers at VA, the Defense Department, the National Institutes of Health, and academia to treat PTSD and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
* Involve the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), with $78.9 million five-year research program into minimally invasive neurotechnologies that would help foster healing processes.
* Join with DoD and NIH to prevent suicides.
* Train VA and DoD employees to recognize signs and symptoms of mental-health conditions.
