The Government Accountability Office (GAO), Congress’ chief watchdog agency, called upon the armed services to do a better job of developing, testing, approving, and acquiring camouflage uniforms. “The military services’ fragmented approach for acquiring uniforms has not ensured the development of joint criteria for new uniforms or achieved cost efficiency,” GAO said in a Sept. 28 report to Congress. Legal guidelines call for the services to use clear selection processes and guidelines, and gather sufficient good information to make sound decisions. According to GAO, only the Marine Corps has followed the guidelines. Because the other services have not, they have been beset with the need to change uniforms several times in recent years. GAO also said that if the services would join together to develop future uniforms, they could save money and come up with better end results.
