Following through on a plan announced months ago, the Navy issued a policy establishing guidelines that would allow women to serve on submarines. Eight guided-missile attack submarines (SSGNs) and ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) each will receive three female officers, who will serve in Blue or Gold crews on two vessels on the East Coast and two on the West Coast. “Women earn about half of all science and engineering bachelor’s degrees,” said Vice Adm. John J. Donnelly, Commander of Naval Submarine Forces. “There are capable women who have the interest, talent, and desire to succeed in the submarine force.”
