Armed Forces News

Last week, Armed Forces News reported deplorable failures of administration, lodging and medical treatment of wounded Army and Marine warriors at an annex of Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In later developments, the Army first reassigned the center commander, Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman — along with a captain, two non-commissioned officers and a third enlisted member — and installed Lt. Gen. Kevin C. Kiley as temporary chief. This created discontent among soldiers and family groups who perceived that Gen. Kiley, the former center commander, knew of the problems. It also must have angered Defense Secretary Robert Gates because he announced the resignation of Secretary of the Army Francis J. Harvey. Gen. Kiley was replaced by Maj. Gen. Eric B. Schoomaker. Meanwhile, the White House announced that a commission would investigate other military and VA facilities. Improvements to the treatment of the Walter Reed patients reportedly were underway (see next item).
