The Defense Department confirmed June 3 that U.S.-led coalition assets hit al-Qaida targets in Yemen. On May 19, a strike killed four al-Qaida operatives in the country’s Shabwah governate, and on March 22, another strike that targeted an al-Qaida on the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) training site killed 56 enemy fighters, according to the Pentagon. U.S. Central Command announced on May 6 that four attacks conducted April 23-28 killed 10 al-Qaida fighters. “Strikes conducted by the U.S. in Yemen continue to diminish AQAP’s presence in the region,” the Pentagon said in a prepared statement.
