GSA has announced $1 billion in gross refunds over 10 years through the federal government’s SmartPay charge card program, through which the government gets cash back on transactions.

Last year agencies purchased over $30 billion on government issued charge cards with 100 million transactions and got back about $187 million. GSA provides the cards to over 350 agencies and negotiates master contracts with national banks.

The program is now enter a second phase, dubbed “SmartPay 2,” featuring cardless accounts, declining balance and stored value cards.

The agency also announced another $1 billion milestone. That’s how much it has invested in constructions projects through the Recovery Act to date.

“Given the intent of the Recovery Act to stimulate the economy and put people back to work, we set a very aggressive goal to obligate our first $1 billion by the end of July,” said acting administrator Paul Prouty, adding, “With that goal met, our focus now is to continue to get shovels in the ground as quickly as possible.”
