Agencies made a number of recommendations in their reports on how to best use the student loan repayment program.
For example, the Department of Commerce recommended publicizing an agency’s loan repayment policy online, as well as including the consent to disclose financial information along with the service agreement, developing checklists to assist managers in submitting required information when requesting student loan repayments, and including student loan repayment information in hiring-manager training.
The Department of Education issued a streamlined checklist for student loan repayment packages on the Department’s intranet site to assist managers with repayment requests.
The Department of Labor stated that student loan repayment eligibility is based on criteria that consider recruitment history, labor-market factors, and special qualifications for the position.
The Department of State recommended continuing to provide senior-level management support, making eligibility criteria transparent, coordinating centralized funding and administrative oversight, and requiring employees to make personal payments toward their loan debt in order to qualify.
