The Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee has approved S-1865, to require federal agencies to notify individuals when they are interacting with or subject to decisions made using certain AI or other automated systems.

The measure, introduced recently after a hearing on the issue, also would require agencies to establish an appeals process that will ensure there is a human review of AI-generated decisions that may negatively affect individuals.

“As more federal agencies use artificial intelligence to better serve the public, taxpayers deserve to know when these systems are involved in making decisions that directly impact their lives,” sponsors said in a statement.

“No American should have to wonder if critical decisions in the government are being made by artificial intelligence. The federal government needs to be proactive and transparent with AI utilization and ensure that decisions aren’t being made without humans in the driver’s seat,” they said.

The committee also approved S-1868, to require an assessment of whether property located near currently or potentially federally leased space could provide opportunities for espionage attempts, cyber-attacks, or unauthorized access. Also approved were several bills related to DHS cybersecurity programs.
