The Air Force has started a pilot project running through
August at seven bases aimed at improving the hiring process
by creating a base-level central approval authority for
filling civilian positions.
Under the test, a personnel resource official, dubbed a PRO,
will be the point of contact in an organization or at a base
that lets the managers know whether they have the funds and a
position number and ensures that information is correct and
forwarded with the fill action. The goal is to have the PRO
cut across several layers in order to get permission to fill
a vacancy. In addition, the materials being forwarded to Air
Force Civilian Personnel should be better, eliminating
possible needs to rework requests, the Air Force says.
In sum, the process should reduce the civilian hiring process
from seven steps to two and from 40 days to three for getting
approval for the manager to initiate a fill action.
Test sites are Tinker AFB, Okla., depot maintenance, Scott
AFB, Ill., Minot AFB, N.D., Randolph AFB, Texas, Eglin AFL,
Fla., depot maintenance, Hill AFB, Utah, depot maintenance,
and Davis Monthan AFB, Ariz., aerospace maintenance and
regeneration center.
