By: FEDweek StaffIn a warning that could apply to employees of other federal agencies as well, the Army has issued a caution to its civilian and military personnel about foreign intelligence entities gathering information under the guise of offering employment opportunities.
Such entities are “posing as consulting firms, corporate recruiters, think tanks, and other seemingly legitimate companies,” says a memo from deputy chief of staff for intelligence Lt. Gen. Anthony R. Hale. “Especially in the context of the recent lapse in appropriations and government shutdown, our adversaries are looking online to identify individuals seeking new employment opportunities, expressing dissatisfaction or describing financial insecurity.”
“They offer jobs or ‘easy’ money to write white papers or provide information with the intent to collect sensitive information for the benefit of their country at the cost of our own,” he wrote, adding that “if the offer seems flattering, urgent, exclusive, or too good to be true, it probably is.”
The memo also reminds employees of requirements to report compensation received from outside employment and the legal obligation of security clearance holders to protect classified data even after leaving federal service.
The GAO similarly recently warned in congressional testimony of the risks of online activities to both personal information and operational security at DoD (also called the Department of War).
