A group of senators has introduced legislation to clear a backlog of stalled executive nominations by permanently exempting a range of positions from Senate confirmation.

Offered by Sens. Charles Schumer, D-NY, Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, the bill would eliminate the need to vote on about 200 executive nominations and about 3,000 “non-controversial” officer corps positions, according to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Another resolution has been introduced to streamline the confirmation process for about 250 part-time positions.

The measures have broad support, with co-sponsorship from Senate majority leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and minority leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
