A bill has been introduced in the House Veterans Affairs Committee that would allow veterans taking distance-learning courses to get a housing stipend under the Post-911 GI bill.
Language in the Post-911 GI bill, set to take effect in August, authorizes an expansion in education benefits for veterans and provides tuition to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars based on the cost of the most expensive four-year public university in the state.
The new measure, HR-950, introduced by committee chair Rep. Bob Filner, D-Calif., would waive a requirement that a student must take at least one class on site in order to receive a housing stipend, which would continue to be determined by the zip code of the school.
It has been referred to the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.
