By: FEDweek StaffA newly introduced bipartisan bill (HR-6548) would strengthen mental health resources for DHS law enforcement officers and agents.
“This legislation establishes a Law Enforcement Mental Health and Resiliency Program within DHS to ensure officers and agents can access the mental health support they need without risking their careers. It requires DHS to improve data collection on suicides and attempted suicides, expand mental health and resiliency training for officers, agents, and their families –and promote awareness for supervisors, caregivers, and support professionals,” sponsors said in a statement.
“It also directs DHS to create the first of its kind Peer-to-Peer Support Program Advisory Council and revise policies that may discourage agents and officers from seeking help,” they said, adding that the bill is endorsed by organizations including the National Treasury Employees Union, National Border Patrol Council and Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association.
Also recently introduced was HR-6439, to expand eligibility for overtime pay for U.S. Border Patrol personnel in supervisory positions at the GS-13 level and above. The bill would build on eligibility for time-and-a-half overtime pay for GS-12 Border Patrol agents authorized in a 2024 defense spending bill and would “improve retention, enhance operational effectiveness, and boost morale,” sponsors said.
