
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has passed S-2272, to extend higher pay rates for federal wildland firefighters that took effect last year and that otherwise will expire September 30.
The committee also approved S-1444, to increase the pay and enhance the training of Border Patrol agents and S-1253, to require an increase of 600 agents plus associated support personnel as needed.
Meanwhile, the Senate has passed S-349, to include positions that may be performed by telework in a hiring preference for federal jobs for a spouse of a member of the armed forces on active duty or of a 100 percent disabled member of the armed forces, or the surviving spouse of a deceased member of the armed forces.
Newly introduced bills include:
* S-2286, to would require OMB to issue guidance to federal agencies on how they can simplify and streamline their grant application processes, including by making notice of funding opportunities easier to understand, updating software and systems that are used to apply for and manage grants, and implementing common data standards for grant reporting. The bill also would require agencies to appoint a senior official to develop and implement the plans to improve their grant application and reporting processes.
* HR-4397, to require OMB to issue guidance to improve the search functions on agency websites within two years.
