The CIO Council has outlined tasks ahead for agencies under a September OMB memo on delivering a “digital-first public experience,” saying the memo “provides agencies with tangible actions and timelines to deliver a digital experience that meets the public’s expectation now and in the future.”
A posting on cio.gov says that actions and standards that agencies must take to “accelerate the design, development and delivery of modern websites and digital services” fall into the categories of (in its words): “improved analytics to better optimize digital experiences”; “ensure information and services are accessible to all individuals”; “consistent branding to establish greater trust for digital interactions with the government”; “de-duplicate and improve content”; “consistent design”; “adopt search best practices”; and “identify digitalization opportunities.”
“This means not building duplicative, stand-alone websites, micro sites, and digital services that are not integrated into an agency’s primary domain, digital product, or customer journey. Agencies should continue to build custom web applications that are designed with the requirements” of the memo, such as by using the U.S. Web Design System, it says.
It says the CIO community should ensure that digital teams are taking steps to implement near-term actions, while individual employees should familiarize themselves with the memo. It further invites the contracting community to “pitch solutions that will help your agency customers be compliant. Do not pitch what we don’t need.”
