DHS has announced over $1.8 billion in fiscal 2010 “preparedness” grants that includes $47 million under Operation Stonegarden for the Southwest border states to support law enforcement personnel, overtime, and other related costs to enhance the capabilities of state, local and tribal law enforcement to secure the US-Mexico border.
The bulk of the $1.8 billion is for 2010 FEMA preparedness grants designed to help states, urban areas, tribal governments and non-profit organizations enhance their protection, prevention, response and recovery capabilities for risks associated with potential terrorist attacks and other hazards.
DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said the funds would pay for training for fire fighters, medics and police officers, as well as support the purchase of first responder equipment.
