The National Capital Planning Commission, the federal government’s main body for federal land and buildings in the national capital area, has approved on a vote of 9-1 DHS’s master plan for a consolidated campus in Southwest Washington DC.
The location is the sprawling site of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital campus, which will now become the home of the equally sprawling department.
The chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., also a committee member, praised the move.
"DHS is now spread throughout 70 buildings across the national capital region making communication, coordination, and cooperation between DHS components a significant challenge," said Lieberman. "A unified headquarters, which would bring together many of the department’s components into a single facility and allow employees to work more efficiently and interactively is a critical cornerstone of the efforts to improve management."
