
The Defense and State departments have announced an agreement on overseas remote work in federal jobs for spouses of civilian federal employees and military personnel assigned to military installations overseas.
The agreement simplifies and expedites DoD participation in State’s Domestic Employees Teleworking Overseas program, which enables federal employees assigned to U.S.-based positions to perform their work at an overseas site, rather than being forced to choose between accompanying their spouse or giving up their jobs, according to a DoD statement.
“With the proper approvals from their employer and the State Department, these employees may accompany their DoD sponsors on assignments overseas and keep their own federal jobs by teleworking remotely from their DoD sponsor’s overseas assignment location,” it says.
The agreement builds on an interim arrangement in place since 2022 including by expediting the process for approval, “a major concern for military families, by making DoD responsible for the suitability determination concerning the safety and security of the foreign residence from which the employee will be remotely working,” it says.
It further no longer requires that State conduct an inspection similar to the one done by DoD of prospective off-installation residences to determine their suitability for occupancy by DoD personnel and their families.
