The Department of Education has launched a website –
www.ope.ed.gov lists – featuring a “master
list” of accredited schools that agencies can use to
cross reference employee educational credentials, aimed
at cracking down on the use of diploma mills in federal
hiring and advancement.
DoE warned however that some legitimate institutions that
have chosen to not participate in the federal student aid
program might not be on the list, which requires approval
from an accrediting agency approved by the department.
Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission has released
a publication, “avoid fake-degree burns by researching
academic credentials,” for hiring managers and HR
professionals — available at
