OMB has issued for comment draft guidance to carry out changes enacted last year to the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program, which sets security and other standards for cloud-based storage and related technologies for federal agencies.
That law formally established FedRAMP as a program within the GSA, created a board to provide input to the agency, and required that OMB issue guidance on the scope of the program and requirements for agencies to use it, and to promote consistency how agencies assess, authorize and use cloud services.
Rep. Gerald Connolly, D-Va., the main sponsor of the FedRAMP Authorization Act, said the draft rules are a first step toward carrying out key portions of that law, including “the promotion of automation and engagement with industry to drive down the cost and burden of FedRAMP authorization, and the reinforcement of the presumption of adequacy.”
“Recognizing reciprocity is smart for vendors and smart for agencies. If you are approved at one window of government, that approval should carry with you to others,” he said.
