By: FEDweek StaffThe federal CIO Council has published a draft guide on security precautions for government-furnished equipment (GFE) such as mobile devices by federal employees on international travel.
“As domestic and international travel picks up, GFE mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets) will facilitate government employee work productivity during foreign travel, including remote connections to office enterprise networks and databases,” it said. However, “because of their portability and always-on state mobile devices are susceptible to compromise, theft, physical damage, and loss.”
The guidance covers topics such as the configuration and use of devices, sample checklists for pre, during, and post travel, considerations for border crossings and access to secured areas while on foreign travel, additional considerations for travelers with multiple countries on the itinerary, including layovers, and use of a disposable or loaner commercial device rather than a government device for travel in high-threat environments.
