The White House has proposed terminating or reducing 141 discretionary spending programs totaling $12 billion for 2008, with the Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development topping the list with programs it says are either low-priority or have not produced results.
It proposed $2.239 billion in education program terminations, including Educational Technology State Grants, Even Start, and Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants, as well as $904 million in reductions mostly to the Safe and Drug-Free Schools state grants, and Career and Technical Education state grants.
It also proposed $895 million in terminations of Health and Human Services programs and $1.385 billion in reductions, including a $500 million reduction to the Social Services Block Grant program – as well as $1.718 billion in reductions to Housing and Urban Development programs.
