Results from the annual Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey taken in mid-year reflect long-running themes of topics that draw especially positive or negative responses, including views about the value of their work on the high end and views of management on the low end.

In OPM’s accounting, a response is deemed positive if the employee agrees or strongly agrees with a statement and negative if the employee disagrees or strongly disagrees, with the rest neutral. The statement drawing the highest positive response, 92 percent, was “it is important to me that my work contributes to the common good.” That was followed by “the work I do gives me a strong sense of accomplishment” at 87.

Also rated highly were “my supervisor treats me with respect” (86); employees in my work unit contribute positively to my agency’s performance” (85); and “I know how my work relates to the agency’s goals” (85).

On the low end, at 31 percent negative, was “management involves employees in decisions that affect their work.” Just above was “in my work unit, differences in performance are recognized in a meaningful way” (29); “I believe the results of this survey will be used to make my agency a better place to work” (28); “considering everything, how satisfied are you with your pay” (25); and “in my organization, arbitrary action, personal favoritism and/or political coercion are not tolerated” (25).
