The Federal Bureau of Investigation has made progress over
two years in developing an enterprise architecture for
modernizing its IT systems, but “much remains to be
accomplished” to establish an effective program, the
Government Accountability Office has said.
It said the FBI is managing the EA program with some best
practices. For example, the Bureau has established a program
office responsible for developing the architecture, it wrote
and approved policy for EA development, and continues to
define what the current system is, and what it should be.
However, according to GAO-05-363, “the EA program office
does not yet have adequate resources, and the architecture
products needed to adequately describe either the current
or the future architectural environments have not been
completed.”
It said that the Bureau remains at risk of developing
systems that are not effective or efficient, bringing to
mind its failed multimillion-dollar virtual case file
management system.
