Top management attention is needed to address long-standing
problems with determining the medical and physical fitness
of the Reserve Force, the Government Accountability Office
has said.
It cited long-standing problems with reserve members not
being in proper medical or physical condition, and said
incomplete and unreliable data have prevented DoD from
being able to determine the extent to which reserve forces
comply with routine examinations.
While reserve components use tracking systems that are
capable of monitoring compliance, only one component has
taken steps to ensure the reliability of its data, according
to GAO-06-105.
It said the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for
Personnel and Readiness has not established a management
control framework or carried out a plan to oversee compliance
with examinations–nor has it “enforced holding all
responsible levels accountable, ensuring that all
requirements are being met, and that complete and reliable
data are being entered into the appropriate tracking system.”
