The General Services Administration is replacing its telecom
acquisitions program in an environment of tremendous change,
presenting the opportunity to take advantage of competitive
prices and use innovative solutions to improve agency
operations, the General Accounting Office has said.
It said Networx is to replace the current Federal
Telecommunications System acquisitions program to handle
long distance and international services and contracts for
wireless and satellite communications products and services.
To take advantage of the situation GSA will have to ensure
it has an adequate inventory of information about existing
telecommunications services and assets so that planners
understand government wide requirements.
GSA leadership and stakeholder commitment is essential in
establishing quality, economical telecom services throughout
the government and GSA’s smooth transition to the new system
could play a key role in bringing the federal government
into the 21st century, said GAO.
