The GPO—now standing for Government Publishing Office, not Government Printing Office—says its offer of buyouts succeeded in achieving its goal reducing its workforce by 5 percent after offering employee buyouts in late calendar 2014. The agency said the buyout will save $7.1 million over the remainder of fiscal 2015.
A total of 103 employees took a buyout, leaving the workforce at 1,699 employees, the fewest in the past century and down 74 percent since 1980. The reductions result from using new technologies including an emphasis on electronic information distribution over traditional printing.
“GPO continues to better position itself to respond to the 21st century digital information needs of Congress, Federal agencies, and the public,” said GPO director Davita Vance-Cooks. “Reducing costs and improving efficiency in carrying out our mission of keeping America information are ongoing GPO objectives.”
