By: FEDweek StaffThe GSA has said it plans to dispose of some 23 properties through a process in which they can be transferred, exchanged or sold, which it said will result in reducing the federal footprint by some 3.5 million square feet and avoiding $1 billion in costs over 10 years.
The agency said that it “will be working closely with customer agencies whose spaces are affected by disposition decisions” and that its 2024 budget proposal “includes funding needed to relocate” affected offices.
The announcement comes as the GSA has been under pressure from Capitol Hill to shed underused space in light of teleworking rates remaining above pre-pandemic levels. The House Oversight and Accountability Committee has scheduled hearings for this week to “explore how significant savings for taxpayers is achievable by consolidating or reducing the inventory of underutilized and empty federal office space,” in the words of the announcement.
That is to be the latest of a series focusing on a GAO report finding that 17 of 24 major agency headquarters buildings in the national capital area were less than 25 percent occupied, with some less than 10 percent full.
