GSA has announced the beginning of a solar installation with the Army’s Fort Huachuca, Arizona that will be DoD’s largest solar installation.
The project will cover 155 acres, leverages private financing and could produce 18 megawatts of electricity, 25 percent of the base’s usage.
The deal was put together with a GSA area-wide public utility contract, and is a collaboration among GSA, the Army Energy Initiatives Task Force, Fort Huachuca, Tucson Electric Power(which will fund, own and operate the installation) and its developer E.ON Climate & Renewables.
The installation gives the base the ability to generate power independently (as soon as this fall) of the electric grid.
The Army’s Energy Initiatives Task Force is working toward a White house goal of deploying one gigawatt of renewable energy by 2025, and is working on other projects in New York, California, Alabama, Hawaii, and Maryland.
