The Biden administration has recognized GSA, DoD and a half-dozen other agencies as winners of the Presidential Sustainability Awards for making “transformational efforts to advance sustainability and climate resilience and lead by example.”

“Federal agencies are electrifying and increasing the efficiency of 300,000 federal buildings, transitioning the federal fleet of 600,000 vehicles to zero-emissions vehicles, and moving to power all federal operations with 100 percent carbon-free electricity,” said a White House statement. “These actions are supporting the growth of America’s clean manufacturing and clean energy industries and jobs, saving taxpayer dollars through reduced energy costs, and creating healthier communities.

The GSA was recognized for “executing the first-ever whole-of-government approach to procuring clean electricity” and the “first-ever contract for locally-supplied” carbon-free electricity; advancing the use of lower-carbon construction materials; and energy-efficient improvements to the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, the largest federal building inside Washington, D.C.; and, along with Transportation, for replacing former buildings of the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center in Cambridge, Mass., with one that is energy-efficient and climate-resilient.

DoD was recognized for installing solar power and battery storage projects at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.; and for environmentally friendly rebuilding projects at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., following hurricane damage.

Recognition also went to USPS for increasing the use of electric vehicles in its fleet; Energy, for transitioning land holdings for clean energy generation and storage; State, for procuring carbon-free energy for its mission and consulates in Japan; Treasury, for building climate-resilient structures for a new IRS call center in Puerto Rico; and Interior, for increasing recycling and reducing plastics waste at national parks and other facilities.
