GSA has announced it issued two information requests from the commercial real estate industry and others to redevelop a large cluster of federal buildings in Southwest Washington, D.C. near L’Enfant Plaza, known as Federal Triangle South. The moves could cause the relocation of thousands of employees in that area of the capital.
Another request for information solicits the development community on exchanging the old FBI headquarters for a new, consolidated headquarters, GSA added.
"An exchange of the FBI headquarters not only saves money, but it also promotes efficiency by consolidating staff into a single state-of-the-art facility, shrinking the federal real estate footprint and eliminating multiple leases," said GSA acting administrator Dan Tangherlini.
GSA says the exchange would replace an outdated, overcrowded J. Edgar Hoover building – a 2.4 million square foot 1960s-era modernist structure located on Pennsylvania Avenue – with an alternative somewhere in the National Capital Region. It’s unclear what fate awaits the current building.
