GSA has announced that it used $210 million in funds under the Recovery Act to place an order for 14,105 vehicles that are more fuel-efficient than those they will be replacing in the federal vehicle fleet.
According to GSA, each new fuel-efficient vehicle replaces, on a one-for-one basis, operational motor vehicles in the federal inventory that met replacement standards, with each new vehicle required to have a higher miles per gallon rating than the one it replaces.
The agency has ordered a total of 17,205 vehicles under the Recovery Act at a cost of $287 million, including 2,933 from Chrysler for $53 million; 7,924 from Ford for $129 million; and 6,348 from General Motors for $105 million.
By September 30, 2009, GSA said it would also order $15 million worth of advanced technology buses and electric vehicles for use in the federal fleet.
