GSA says it is on track to meet a White House renewable energy goal following issuance of a power supply contract to a commercial wind energy developer. The contract with a joint venture between the Mesa Grande Band of Mission Indians, a federally-recognized Native American tribe, and Geronimo Energy, a commercial wind developer, is to add 500,000 megawatt-hours of electricity to the power grid annually.
Increased use of renewable energy by federal agencies was a goal of a 2013 presidential memo, which set a purchase goal of 20 percent by 2020, which the contract will roughly meet.
The contract also will help the government meet renewable energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals set by a series of laws and executive orders; GSA estimated that it will eliminate nearly 500,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
The power will be supplied into the PJM power grid, the largest in North America that includes all or parts of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
