Federal Manager's Daily Report

GSA has said it is interested in a car-sharing program to help agencies reduce costs, improve efficiency, and optimize vehicle use, anticipating that the demand for car sharing in the federal government will increase due to budget constraints and the need to improve efficiency and savings in government operations.

It has issued an award to four vendors (Enterprise, ZipCar, Hertz, and Carpingo) to provide car-sharing services, paving the way for agencies to use government vehicles on a short-term hourly basis, not to exceed one day.

GSA said it would pilot car-sharing as an option for federal agencies in Washington, D.C., New York City, Boston, and Chicago, exploring how commercial car-sharing solutions could work to improve efficiency in the federal fleet and reduce transportation costs government-wide.
