The Department of Homeland Security has announced
that it signed a memorandum of understanding with
NASA to collaborate and coordinate on research and
development projects, as well as share expertise and
technologies.
According to DHS, the agreement provides a means for
DHS and NASA to coordinate the evaluation of existing
technologies, speed development, undertake joint
research and development, share resources and
personnel, and work with the private sector and other
public agencies in joint programs.
“When the same technologies that keep us one step
ahead of terrorists can also support the diverse
technical needs of NASA’s missions, we better serve
the nation by sharing efforts,” said DHS under
secretary for science and technology Dr. Charles
McQueary.
The agencies will share information and leverage
federal resources and assets, DHS said.
It said each project would be defined by an
implementing agreement outlining specific terms —
such as the use of facilities, personnel and transfer
of funds — and be subject to the specific laws
governing each agency.
