Meanwhile, four leading members of the House Oversight and Government Reform committee have called on President Obama to nominate a permanent inspector general for the department, where the post has been occupied by an acting IG since 2008.
Committee chair Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and ranking member Elijah Cummings, D-Md., were among those signing a letter to President Obama.
The letter calls attention to testimony from the Project on Government Oversight last year on the matter: "Permanent IGs are in a better position to be viewed as credible than are acting IGs . . . permanent IGs are selected for the position on the basis of their qualifications to lead an IG office, whereas a temporary IG may be a good auditor or investigator, but may not be as qualified for a leadership role.”
