By: FEDweek StaffThe House has passed HR-4502, to prohibit federal agencies from establishing minimum educational requirements for cybersecurity positions unless required by state or local law, the latest step toward downplaying the role of formal education in qualification requirements for federal positions.
Under the bill, agencies further could consider an applicant’s education only in conjunction with other minimum qualifications for a position if the applicant’s education directly reflects the required competencies for the position.
It would apply to positions in the competitive service that are classified under the information technology management series or any other position designated as a cybersecurity position by the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education.
OPM would have to annually publish publicly any changes to minimum qualifications relating to education for these positions and data on the level of education of those occupying these positions.
