A report from a Biden administration task force on hiring into federal positions involving artificial intelligence-related work says that interest has been high and that agencies will have filled hundreds of positions in the summer.

The report was the first from the AI Tech and Talent Task Force, created last fall under an executive order on AI that among other things called for a talent surge in federal agencies. Agencies have hired more than 150 people into AI and AI-enabling roles, tech talent programs are on track to bring in about another 100 by the summer, and agencies plan to add at least 500 more through fiscal 2025, it said.

“The response from the public has been fantastic. In the month after EO 14110 was issued, tech talent programs hiring as part of the AI Talent Surge saw an average 288% increase in AI applications compared to previous periods; some tech talent programs saw up to 600% – 2000% increases in AI applications,” it said.

“Moreover, public interest in federal AI roles remains high. From January through March 2024, applications for AI and AI-enabling roles have doubled as compared to similar periods in 2022 and 2023. The message is clear: the public is ready and motivated to join the federal government to work on AI priorities,” it said.

Those already hired “have written policy for the safe and trustworthy use of AI in government, and they are informing efforts to use AI to improve electrical grid resilience and to expedite permitting. They will be ensuring powerful AI models are safe for the public and working with our international partners to align our AI efforts across the world,” says.

Looking ahead, “We will work to institutionalize cross-government changes to improve agencies’ hiring practices for AI and tech talent. We will look to increase tech and AI leadership in government and to foster a culture of public service and accompanying institutional supports across the tech ecosystem, leading by example by investing in a workforce with trust and safety expertise at a moment in which industry is increasingly downsizing personnel with this skillset.”
